Does Wearing Glasses Make My Eyesight Worse?

Does Wearing Glasses Make My Eyesight Worse

Will wearing glasses weaken my eyes and make my eyesight worse?

This is a very common question that we get asked all the time. Many of you worry that glasses are making your eyesight worse over time.

Well, you don’t need to worry any more, because the answer is NO! The idea that wearing glasses all of the time will diminish your eyesight and make your eyes lazy is a myth.

Many of our patients tell us that they deliberately reduce the amount of time they wear their glasses each day to save their eyes. There really is no need!

The Myth!

“Does wearing your shoes 2 sizes too big make your feet bigger?  Does not wearing shoes make it easier for you to walk?”

Ridiculous, right? Well, the assumption that wearing glasses makes your eyesight worse is almost as ridiculous! There is no scientific evidence to suggest that correcting your sight with prescribed glasses or contact lenses can have any adverse effects on your sight. So the bottom line is – wear your glasses, and wear them as often as you need to.

The Truth

We are all visual learners, and the clearer an image is projected on the retina, the better the resolution of the visual stimulus to the brain. In fact, not wearing glasses will actually make your uncorrected vision worse over time.

Parents often decide to regulate and reduce the amount of time their child wears their glasses. They mistakenly believe that in the crucial stages of development, wearing glasses will make for lazy eyes. In fact, this has been proven to have a negative impact on educational development. Without optimum vision, your child will not take in information as well, or perform as well in exams or assignments. It is as simple as that.

If your optician prescribes you glasses, it is crucial that you wear them. It is also crucial that your prescription is correct.
